Making bee houses

Making bee houses

Many wild bees rely on hollow spaces and structures in which to build nests for their young. Employees of SIX worked with the nature conservation association Pro Natura Aargau to make nest boxes for these wandering solitary bees.

Thick boughs of resin-free timber are sawn to the right length...

...and reeds trimmed to the right size.

The various components are fitted into the boxes...

...and holes are drilled into the hard wood.

Finally, the wild bee hotels are cleaned out thoroughly.

Something for every taste: Wild bee hotels provide nesting opportunities for around a fifth of the 580 species of wild bee native to Switzerland. Each individual bee is able to choose whether and how to make a nest for its brood.
