SIX trains system engineers, application developers and now also mediamaticians. 41 IT apprentices are currently completing their training at SIX. During the visit of the Zurich’s Head of the Department of Education in the middle of April, five of them showed how apprentices at SIX benefit from this professional and diversified vocational training based on practice.
Our apprentices presented the in-house IT lab which independently develops and operates internal applications. They also introduced the cloud-based container technology that allows for server capacities to be created within seconds, and the progress in network technology which allows to save enormous costs. The presentations also covered a coding demonstration, during which the apprentices encouraged Silvia Steiner to program a line of code herself. Her task was to replace the SIX logo on a simple website with the Zurich’s cantonal coat of arms.
Apart from the new coding skills, what are Silvia Steiner’s insights after her visit at SIX? “The dual education system is my major concern. 80% of Swiss young people make the decision to take up vocational training. I am constantly surprised and glad at the same time when I see how apprentices present their tasks to us with so much joy and know-how. I could also experience this at SIX.”
