Insights into an Internship at SIX:

Portrait of Thomas Naef

What did you study?
I gained my Bachelor’s in Economics from ZHAW in Winterthur.

What do you expect to get out of your internship?
It is important to me to complement theoretical knowledge at the university with practical experience in the field. I'd like to be appreciated as a valuable member of the team, to be entrusted with responsibility and to be allowed to work independently on specific topics. At the end I should also have a better idea of whether permanent employment in this business environment is for me.

Why did you decide in favour of an internship at SIX?
There is only one Swiss Exchange. I completed vocational training at a bank and am already familiar with this industry. Thanks to my internship, I now understand the workings of the entire financial center a lot better.

What does your internship involve?
The induction program was well structured and I got to know employees from different business areas. That helped me a lot to understand how everything fits together. I am doing my internship at SIX Swiss Exchange. My duties are very wide and varied. For example, I compile client presentations for product managers and analyse various stocks. I am also responsible for a report I compile and send out daily.

Has SIX fulfilled your expectations of an internship?
My colleagues settled me into my role in just a few days. Since then I have been a valuable part of the team. In recent weeks I have been allowed to attend various events and in the process start to build up my own network.

What characterizes SIX as you see it?
SIX is an innovative employer. Employees are always willing to lend a hand and they work well together. I am able to use my initiative and am given feedback that helps me improve. I really appreciate the various courses I’m able to attend, for example the one on trader training.

What did you study?
I gained my Bachelor’s in Economic from the University of Zurich in summer 2017.

What do you expect to get out of your internship?
I want my internship to teach me a lot. I want to gain insights into various projects and take on responsibility. It is important for me to work on projects that are related to day-to-day business.

Why did you decide in favour of an internship at SIX?
I looked far and wide. When I read the job advert, the project management aspects particularly appealed to me since they are very important in many organizations. I became curious and wanted to better understand what it all involves. In the interviews, I clicked with the project manager and with the team as a whole. That is something that is always very important to me.

What does your internship involve?
I work in the Financial Information division, where I support colleagues in two different projects. One is in the early stages, the other is nearing completion. This gives me an insight into different project phases and the work these entail.

Has SIX fulfilled your expectations of an internship?
I like the fact that I can perform duties that are important and contribute something to the company. I am also learning a great deal. At university, for example, I wasn’t very fond of IT as a subject. Now, however, I have been able to approach the subject of databases in a totally different way. I can see and appreciate how it works in practice.

What characterizes SIX as you see it?
We have a good team and it’s fun working together with my colleagues. They involve me in all topics. For that reason, SIX is a good employer for me and I look forward to coming into the office every day

What will you take with you on your professional journey?
I have learned a great deal in the field of project management and was able to build on and expand my business and technical expertise.
