Swiss and Spanish markets of SIX report strong year-on-year turnover growth in August
In August 2026, combined trading turnover for SIX Swiss Exchange and BME Exchange was up 19.5% in comparison to August 2025, reaching CHF 125.9 bn traded across the month. Turnover for the individual Swiss and Spanish markets was up 15.9% and 28.8% respectively, with CHF 87.3 bn and EUR 41.2 bn traded.
Continuing momentum from July, ETFs remained the highest performing trading segment on SIX Swiss Exchange in terms of year-on-year (YOY) growth, with turnover up 72.4% in comparison to August 2025. This increase was also reflected on the listings side, with new ETF listings up 90.0% YOY to reach 211 listed on the Swiss market in 2026, adding to a total of 2,282 available to investors. August also saw Allianz Global Investors join as a new ETF issuer with four new ETFs, bringing the total number of ETF issuers on SIX Swiss Exchange to 37.
Equities saw the strongest YOY growth on BME Exchange, as trading turnover rose by 27.1% to reach EUR 28.6 bn across the month. Fixed income also reported notable monthly performance with a 33.2% YOY increase in turnover. In addition, August witnessed ETF trading on the Spanish exchange surpass the EUR 1.0 bn turnover threshold for the year to date, a milestone reached three months earlier than in 2025.
During the reporting month, SIX saw the Spanish blue chip index IBEX 35 surpass the 20,000 point threshold for the first time (4 August) and reach a new all-time high of 20,356.5 points (13 August). At month end, it was up 1.0% to reach 19,974.0 points, contributing to a 15.4% rise since the beginning of the year. The Swiss blue chip index SMI declined by 0.4% to 14,286.4 points, up 7.7% in 2026 to date.
