Trading turnover on SIX markets rises by a third in September

In September 2026, combined trading turnover for SIX Swiss Exchange and BME Exchange rose by a third (33.8%) compared to August, reaching CHF 168.5 bn while the number of transactions rose by 17.6% to 8,190,386.

Equities reported the strongest performance on SIX Swiss Exchange, rising 33.8% month-on-month (MOM) and 30.3% year-on-year (YOY). This contributed to an overall increase in trading turnover on the Swiss market to reach CHF 111.9 bn, constituting growth of 28.2% compared to the previous month.

BME Exchange recorded a similarly positive uptick in overall trading turnover, with EUR 59.9 bn traded, representing a 45.4% rise on August. The securitized derivatives and fixed income segments led this growth, with turnover almost doubling for derivatives (94.7%) and for bond trading (92.4%) over the previous month.

The Spanish blue chip index IBEX 35 concluded September at 19,426.0 points, down 2.7% from August, with the index returning 12.2% for 2026 to date. A similar trend was seen for the Swiss blue chip index SMI, which declined 3.2% to 13,830.3 points, but remained up 4.2% since the start of the year.

September also saw the launch of SIX Market Signal. The new data marketplace improves access to real-time exchange data from SIX Swiss Exchange, BME Exchange and Aquis Exchange for both institutional and retail traders.

Gregor Braun, Head Cash Market Sales, Exchanges, SIX, commented: “As markets have moved out of the quieter summer period, it’s positive to see cross-market turnover growth on both SIX Swiss Exchange and BME Exchange. The launch of SIX Market Signal underscores another key milestone in removing accessibility and affordability barriers to high-quality exchange data in Europe. In the long term, this will help increase trading both across SIX markets and European markets as a whole.”
