Corporate Citizenship at SIX

Aligning Action Toward Positive Environmental And Social Impact

Our Commitment to Good Corporate Citizenship

As one of the four pillars of our Sustainability Strategy, we take our corporate citizenship and our responsibility to society, our community, and the earth seriously within our operations and governance. Our commitment to good corporate citizenship comprises three key areas of action: enabling the transition to net-zero emissions, being a trusted partner, and contributing to financial literacy.

We believe that to have a truly positive impact we must build good corporate citizenship into every part of our work, so we developed a multi-dimensional approach to do so – outlined here in accordance with the UN Sustainable Development Goals:

SDG Goals

Advancing the Sustainable Development Goals

The United Nations developed 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved by 2030 as part of their Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, a global framework for sustainable development. SIX is proud to actively contribute to the progress of the following SDGs as part of its corporate citizenship:

Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all

SIX promotes financial literacy and knowledge, contributing to a stable economy. SIX is the main sponsor of the Swiss Finance Museum and regularly collaborates with universities to publish studies for the financial community.

Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

SIX sees gender equality as a key lever to a more sustainable economy and society. Gender equality is a cornerstone of our work as a responsible employer, financial market infrastructure provider, and product and services provider. SIX is proud to be one of the many forward-thinking member companies of Advance, who commit to increasing gender equality in business in Switzerland. SIX also provides corporate gender equality data to inform investment decisions based on these criteria. SIX has also been recognized for its commitment to fair pay, receiving a Fair-On-Pay certificate for its equal pay policy.

Promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all

In its position at the interface between financial markets and business, SIX supports the transition to a more sustainable economy by incorporating sustainability into its core activities and helps issuers, investors, and customers do the same. As a Sustainable Stock Exchanges Initiative partner, SIX joins stock exchanges from around the world to usher in sustainable economic growth.

Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation

Operating the stock exchanges in Switzerland and Spain, SIX helps sustainable companies – or those in transition – obtain financing through capital markets and increase investors’ visibility into companies’ sustainability profiles.

SIX has developed a number of initiatives to drive this work forward, including Sparks and BME Growth, stock exchanges for small- and medium-sized enterprises, and participates in Tenity to promote fintech start-ups that are committed to a sustainable financial center. SIX also offers SMEs guidance on sustainability reporting through tailored events and training sessions.

Further, SIX advocates at national and international levels for the harmonization of ESG regulatory requirements and reporting standards with the goal or reducing complexity for reporting companies and making sustainability profiles of companies more transparent to investors.

Reduce inequality within and among countries

SIX builds mechanisms to support the creation of an inclusive economy and society into its role as a financial market infrastructure provider, an ESG data, products, and services provider, and a responsible employer.

SIX fosters diversity and inclusion by living it out in our culture, SIX Spirit, and striving to create a workplace environment in which people can thrive regardless of nationality, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, physical abilities, or religion.

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

SIX is committed to protecting the climate and fostering the transition to a low-carbon and climate-resilient economy. To drive that work forward, SIX works to decarbonize its operation and value chain and support the transition to a low-carbon and climate-resilient economy in all our spheres of influence.

SIX committed to the Science Based Targets Initiative and works to steadily reduce its carbon emissions, with a goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. As part of Energy Model Zurich, SIX works to increase their energy efficiency by at least 1.5% each year at its Zurich headquarters.
