Science-Based Targets to Achieve Net Zero by 2050

In 2024, we took an important step in our commitment to address climate change by setting near- and long-term emissions reduction targets by 2050:

To achieve net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across our value chain.

Near-Term Targets: Near-Term Targets:

Reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 42% by 2030, from a 2023 baseline. Additionally, a 25% reduction in scope 3 emissions. By 2029, 60% of our suppliers (by emissions) in purchased goods and services will need to have their own science-based targets in place.

Long-Term Targets: Long-Term Targets:

Reduce absolute scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions by 90% by 2050, from a 2023 baseline.

These targets were developed using The Corporate Net Zero Standard and approved by the Science Based Targets Initiative, a leading authority on emissions reductions and net zero goals.

In accordance with SBTi criteria, remaining emissions will be neutralized through the permanent removal and storage of carbon from the atmosphere to ensure we meet our net zero commitment responsibly and effectively.

Our Path to Net Zero: Your Questions Answered

What is the difference between net zero and carbon neutrality?

Net zero and carbon neutrality are related concepts but have two different meanings.

Net zero means striking a net zero balance between emitting greenhouse gases and removing greenhouse gases. It extends to GHG emissions beyond carbon, and focuses on removing those that are already in the atmosphere.
Carbon neutrality focuses more specifically on carbon emissions and differs in that it incorporates carbon compensations

What are the significant challenges to achieving the global net zero target set by the UN Paris Agreement ?

One of the most significant challenges to achieving net zero is the fact that a truly effective solution must be two-fold: reducing future emissions and removing the emissions already in the atmosphere. There are enormous concentrations of CO2 in the earth's atmosphere that already cause significant damage to the planet – these concentrations must be durably removed. Equally importantly, the removed emissions must not be immediately replaced by new emissions – so we must therefore reduce future GHG emissions into the atmosphere.
