In addition to the SIX White Papers, we have expanded our thought leadership offering: In our new "Market Insights" series, we analyze current trends and developments that we are observing in the cash business in a short and concise way. Keep your finger on the pulse of the transformation in the cash ecosystem with our Market Insights!
Contactless ATM Transactions are increasing rapidly throughout the world. The question as to how the supply and collection of cash can be guaranteed in future acquires a new dimension through the introduction of contactless technologies such as QR code and NFC.
Swiss financial institutions are increasingly outsourcing the management of their ATMs. In order to exploit optimization potential, it is necessary to bundle services with a provider. An important component of this is the cash management service.
Card-issuing banks are increasingly offering their customers debit and credit cards with multiple accepted card logos and thus multiple payment options. ATM operators can prepare for the changing situation by prioritizing cards with multiple payment options.
The trend in attacks on financial institutions is shifting towards logical and cyber attacks. This new threat level requires a central, cross-bank solution. SIX has initiated workshops together with the banks, analyzed security incidents and attacks, and already developed initial solutions.
A recent study commissioned by SIX shows that the number of withdrawals and deposits at ATMs could be handled with just a third of the machines currently installed in Switzerland – thanks to resizing and without restricting access to cash.
Switzerland is on its way to becoming a "cash-light society”. Jörg Engelhardt, Senior Business Development Manager in the Cash ecosystem at SIX, explains winning strategies for an efficient and reliable cash supply in the future in an article published in Zeitschrift für das gesamte Kreditwesen (Journal for the entire banking sector), issue 5-2021 (in German).
SIX estimates that Swiss banks incur over CHF 1 billion in cash services costs every year. However, cash services do little to help financial institutions stand out positively in the market. Furthermore, financial institutions incur these costs almost irrespective of the volume of cash. The percentage share of the costs thus increases as the amount of cash decreases. SIX realizes cost savings for its partners by standardizing equipment, software and processes, maintaining interfaces and taking care of the testing. We are also actively involved in transforming the sector: together with banks and commerce, we are advancing centralized management and developing innovative collaborative solutions for cash services in the Swiss financial market.
Contactless transactions at ATMs are enjoying increasing demand.
SIX completed the “ATMfutura” migration at the end of last week. This means that, under the leadership of SIX, all banks have equipped their Bancomats with uniform software.
SIX launches a scheme to regulate national ATM transactions. The aim of the “National Cash Scheme” (NCS) is to create a general standard for cash transactions in Switzerland.
Credit cards, debit cards or apps such as TWINT – cashless payments today are diverse, secure, user-friendly, quick and often digital. The use of cash is on the decrease. This trend is now accelerating even more due to COVID-19. As a result of the lockdown, the number of cash transactions has dropped almost by half. This poses a challenge to Swiss banks operating ATMs.
Is the COVID-19 crisis demoting the importance of cash? Or is cash gaining
relevance? Or is the answer to both questions “yes”?
