Proof of Concept: Centralized Operation of the Swiss Bancomat Infrastructure
Use of cash in Switzerland, as in all highly developed countries, is in sharp decline, not least due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result of the decline in cash usage, it is becoming increasingly challenging for banks to ensure the efficient operation of their ATMs. One possible model for the future, already established in some European countries, is to have ATMs operated centrally by a single infrastructure provider for all banks and their customers (“ATM pooling”).
With this in mind, SIX will take over the operation of the Bancomats at the Sursee hospital from November 2021 to April 2022 as a proof-of-concept trial. During the test period, hypotheses related to a (potentially) central cash supply under a bank-neutral brand identity will be tested. The aim of the SIX initiative is to gather empirical values with regard to how cash supply in Switzerland can be ensured in the long term.
Survey
As part of the current proof-of-concept trial, hypotheses related to a possible central ATM infrastructure are to be tested, such as how customers react when bank-specific branding (logo, etc.) is removed from Bancomats or when an ATM with a bank-neutral brand is operated at existing locations.
